Who We Are ?
Welcome to our site! This is pilot research study that was created and conducted by Sarah De Nardi and Anyier Yuol, researchers in the School of Social Sciences, Western Sydney University.
The project was a small scale research that explored the experiences of place and restrictions to mobility for persons of transnational (meaning with cultural, family, citizenship and emotional links to more than one country), migrant and refugee or asylum seeking backgrounds, who found themselves in Australia during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In this study, participants were prompted to express their experiences during the pandemic, using places, things and memories to tell the story of how they got through this challenging time. ‘Experience’ was meant in the broadest sense of the term.
The online activity of the project consisted in adding places to a Padlet board. Some participants used paper and ink to draw their story; most took photos of anything that was meaningful to them. The entries on the Padlet map reflect the diversity and richness of transnational lives and cultures in Australia and globally. In the gallery section, you will find examples of the entries made by our participants, expressing a multitude of feelings and stories ranging from home comforts to longing for lands far away and at the time inaccessible due to the border closures.
